The final team was decided on June 16 with 11 players making the roster. They have already been on the court for over 30 hours of training since OBA Provincials ended at the end of April. The team competed in an AAU Tournament on June 9th and won their division against some strong athletic teams from Michigan. This group of young ladies went into their Provincial Tournament last weekend with only two wins under their belt during the regular season. They grew tremendously from that first practice under the leadership of Andrew Newcombe and Jeff Braithewaite. The girls played hard this past weekend to complete their round robin play with a 3-0 record. They beat Brantford CYO 25-17, Orillia Basketball 26-15 and IEM Scarborough 30-27. The girls lost a heart breaker to Dundas Dynamo 20-16 in the semis and the Bronze Medal game to IEM Scarborough 18-15. It was a valiant effort from all the girls over the weekend and so many of them played the best games they have ever played. Congrats Girls on a successful weekend and good luck next year.

The boys went 3-0 in pool play against teams from Stoney Creek, North Toronto and Ottawa. The boys won their semi final game on Sunday against the Ottawa Shooting Stars in a complete team effort with a score of 73-55. The boys played against the South Windsor Warriors in the final. It was a back and forth effort that came down to the final few seconds of play to decide the winner. Tate Wilkins grabbed a rebound on a missed winning layup from South Windsor and was fouled with 1.5 seconds on the clock. The player drew an unsporting foul as there was not play on the ball. Tate missed both free throws and the score remained tied. Gavin Edwards threw an inbound pass to Tate who then put up a 3 pointer for the win. It was another group effort put in by the boys and they won 48-45 for the Gold Medal.

March Madness was alive and well throughout the March 23-25 weekend for the Chatham-Kent Wildcats Major Atom Girls Basketball team as they played in the Ontario Cup in Aurora, On.
The team was ranked 15th in the province and placed in Division 2 as the 7th seed for the weekend. Division 2 included teams ranked 9th -16th in the Province. The girls played three hard fought games in the Round Robin. They had a disappointing 1 point loss in their opening game against 3rd seed South York Silver Knights 37-36 on Friday night. This game was followed up by an absolutely outstanding 43-37 win over the 2nd seed Caledon Cougars and a 37-25 win versus 6th seed Ottawa Shooting Stars on Saturday. During all three games the team displayed great team defence and exhibited remarkable resiliency to overcome setbacks. The wins gave the Wildcats first place in their pool and a birth in the Gold Medal Game on Sunday.
The intense play and great team defense that carried the Wildcats in the round robin continued into Sunday’s final versus the undefeated Barrie Royals. An enthusiastic crowd of supporters for both the Royals and Wildcats energized the gym. The Wildcats imposed their will on the Royals and took a 15 point lead into halftime. In the second half the girls played smart basketball and cruised to a 44 to 32 victory. Leading scorers for the weekend were Megan Beselaere and Aliyah Isaac with all players providing a swarming “Cat Attack Defense”.

This Championship was the second time in three years that this group of girls have won a Gold Medal in Division 2 at Provincials. The win places the Wildcats 9th among all Major Atom teams in Ontario.
